News for 2011

I’m looking forward to 2011, lots of good things coming up. First bit of great news is that I won the London jazz instrumentalist award in the autumn. You can read a review of it by Sarah Ellen Hughes here:

http://londonjazz.blogspot.com/2010/08/london-jazz-awards-winners.html

The best singer awards were taken by the incredible Norma Winstone and Cleveland Watkiss.

Next up we’ve got a new recording which I’m hoping to release on the 1st October at Kings Place – put it in your diaries now! If you want to hear a sneak preview you can listen on my myspace page:

http://www.myspace.com/johnturville

Any feedback would be appreciated!

That’s all for now, I’ll do a new post which has got some up-to-date listings for the trio for 2011.

F-IRE Festival

One of the great things about London at the moment is the number of small jazz festivals that are springing up organised by collectives based around the city. I was lucky to be free on all the nights of the Loop Festival back in February, which was a great event. We had a fun gig with Dog Soup with the addition of the fantastic pianist and writer Hans Koller on Wurlitzer, and I was especially inspired by Phronesis, The Golden Age of Steam, and Ivo Neame’s quartet on other nights. Last year we also had the one-day E17 Festival, which was a great occasion and hang with bands in this area of town (Walthamstow), including Jez Frank’s Compassionate Dictatorship, Brigitte Beraha’s and the E17 Large Ensemble, including a commision by the fantastic and local(!) pianist Liam Noble. Then last week Richard Turner organised a three-day ConFest at the Con Cellar in Camden – including a blazing set by Julian Arguelles on the Friday and a vibey Outhouse and The Partisans on the Sunday.

The latest festival coming up (in May) is the F-IRE Festival of New Talent, which I’m very pleased to be performing in with the trio (on the 28th May). The first band is a great project led by a friend of mine (bass player/composer) called Will Collier. It’s in the Pheasantry on Kings Road, near Sloane Square, so it’d be great to see some of you down there. The opening night in the Pizza Express, Dean Street on the 21st also features The Partisans as well as Adam Waldmann’s Kairos 4tet, who I’m playing piano with on this occassion.

If you can’t make it, I believe it’s also going to be on radio 3, watch this space!

That’s all for now folks!
